The Doing Life Seminars

Ready to give Wednesday a second look?
In one week, our reformatted midweek schedule launches with new energy and opportunities for growth.

We call it Midstream, and there are plenty of opportunities to take a plunge!

In last week’s blog, I described some of the changes you can expect, including: A new food service featuring extended serving times, a kids’ menu, and quality that will keep you coming back; rearranged start times for children and youth to coincide with adult programming; and new studies meant to offer practical help for navigating life.

During the 6:30 hour, we are calling these new studies “The Doing Life” Seminars. Here is a list of The Doing Life Seminars this fall, by date.

August 13:     “Foretaste”
Leaders: JCBC Pastors
Foretaste will be the first session of Midstream. It will not only provide an opportunity to get a foretaste of the delicious food you can expect, it will also be an opportunity to hear a brief introduction to all of the upcoming seminars this fall. This session begins at 6:30 p.m.

August 20:     Loving Ethiopia: Mobilization Report
Leaders: King and Darwin Families
This is a presentation of the recent mission trip to Ethiopia, undertaken by my family as well as Charlie and Molly Darwin and family. We will report on our experience, share the impact JCBC is already having, and present opportunities for future service. Our special guest this night will be David Harding, CBF Field Personnel and President of Water is Life International.

August 27, September 3, 10, 17: The 5 Love Languages
Leaders: Shaun & Laura King
Based on the incredibly helpful book by Gary Chapman, this seminar is designed to help couples nurture greater intimacy in their marriages. The 5 Love Languages are simple yet very practical ways to better understand (and meet) the needs of your spouse. This tool has been the single most helpful resource in my own marriage, which is why Laura and I are excited to lead this seminar together. Note: Reading the book prior to the seminar is recommended, but not required.

September 24: Facetime with the Pastor(s)
This open forum is designed for community conversation and theological dialogue. We will focus primarily on the curiosities and questions of those who are in attendance. Discussion will be spontaneous and fun.

October 1, 8, 15: Parenting Well in a Technological Age
Leader: Connie White
An expert in the area of technology, Connie brings years of experience, traveling the world to educate parents, school systems and churches on the effects of technology on the adolescent brain, and the healthy steps to take in raising kids in a world of screens. Some of the topics covered will include: What is a healthy amount of screen-time? How to recognize cyber-bullying and stop it? ‘Sexting’ and Students. What apps are hot with kids right now, and why? These and other critical issues will be addressed.

October 22: Facetime with the Pastor(s)
This open forum is designed for community conversation and theological dialogue. We will focus primarily on the curiosities and questions of those who are in attendance. Discussion will be spontaneous and fun.

October 29: Trunk or Treat
This community-wide event drew well over a thousand neighbors to our parking lot. It is an evening of great fun and fellowship. Details on how you can participate, TBA.

November 5, 12: The Price of Privilege
Jill Jenkins
In recent years, numerous studies have shown that bright, charming, seemingly confident and socially skilled teenagers from affluent, loving families are experiencing epidemic rates of depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders; rates higher than in any other socioeconomic group of American adolescents. Materialism, pressure to achieve, perfectionism, and disconnection are combining to create a perfect storm that is devastating children of privilege and their parents alike.
The Price of Privilege, by Madeline Levine, is a book that addresses the situation above. This two week study will debunk some common parenting myths, and will equip parents to raise grateful children with healthy perspectives and expectations of life.

November 19: Facetime with the Pastor(s)
This open forum is designed for community conversation and theological dialogue. We will focus primarily on the curiosities and questions of those who are in attendance. Discussion will be spontaneous and fun.
